What is Arsenic used for?

Post by admin »

Arsenic is used in alloys, semiconductors, and wood preservatives.Historically, it was used in pesticides, dyes, and medicines, but these uses have largely declined due to its toxicity. While primarily known as a poison, its current main industrial applications include electronics, batteries, and the production of glass, textiles, and metal adhesives.

Industrial Uses
  • Glass Manufacturing:
Arsenic compounds, especially trioxide, are used in producing colorless glass.
  • Wood Preservatives:
Arsenic compounds were used in treating outdoor wood for decks and playgrounds, though this practice is declining due to health concerns.
  • Alloying Agent:
Arsenic strengthens lead alloys used in car batteries and ammunition.
  • Electronics:
High-purity arsenic and compounds like gallium arsenide are crucial in making semiconductor devices, including solar cells, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and integrated circuits.
Historical Uses
  • Pesticides and Herbicides:
Arsenic was a common ingredient in pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides, but has been phased out due to its toxicity and persistent nature.
  • Dyes:
Pigments like Scheele's Green and Paris Green contained arsenic and were popular in the past.
  • Medicine:
Historically, arsenic compounds were used in pharmaceuticals for various ailments. The compound arsenic trioxide is still approved in some cases for treating a specific type of leukemia.
  • Rodenticides:
Arsenic was used in rat poison but has been largely replaced by less toxic anticoagulants.
Other Applications
  • Textiles and Paper: Arsenic is used in the processing of textiles and paper.
  • Metal Adhesives: It serves as a component in metal adhesives.
  • Hide Tanning: Arsenic is used in the process of tanning hides.
  • Feed Additives: In limited quantities, it has been used as a feed additive.
